Gonzales: "Stevenson Is Slow Like An Elephant"

By Daniel Cloutier

MONTRÉAL - The American boxer Jesus "El Martillo" Gonzales said that he has suffered a lot in the last two months in his training camp, but Saturday evening, in the ring of the Bell Centre Theater, it will the time of the Montrealer Adonis Stevenson to suffer terribly.

Gonzales (27-1-0) and Stevenson (16-1-0) will fight in a elimination bout for the second position in the IBF super middleweight ratings.

"I had my training camp in Calgary," Alberta, said Gonzales this morning, in the final press conference, hold at the Houston Restaurant in Montreal downtown. "I was running seven miles each morning in a very cold temperature. It was the thing to do, because I will fight here in Montréal, where the winter is like in Alberta. I suffered a lot in training, but Saturday night, it will the turn to Stevenson to suffer. He will live a very tough evening, I can promise you that. If Stevenson believes that he will fight Lucian Bute later one this year, or next year, for the IBF title, he is mixing fiction and reality. I will be the one who will challenge Bute."

Gonzales said that he was watching tapes of fights involving Stevenson during his training camp. "Stevenson seems to be strong physically, but he is slow and predictable," said Gonzales, a boxer living in Phoenix, Arizona. "Stevenson is moving like an elephant in the ring. My speed will cause him a lot of problems, no doubt about it. When I will connect him with my power shots, you will see, he will fall. If this fighter has been unable to take Darnell Boone in 2010, do you think seriously that he can take my punches? Come on! Stevenson said that our fight will not go to the limit, and I totally agree with him. The KO seems to be inevitable. But Adonis is ridiculous when he is saying that he will the one who will stay on his legs when the fight will be stopped."

Stevenson called Gonzales "big mouth".

"Gonzales said that I am a big mouth, but you know as I do that HE is the big mouth," said Stevenson. "Believe me, he will learn to respect me in the ring. I will hurt with all my power shots. Look at his face. You will not recognized him at the end of the bout."

Yvon Michel, the promoter of the GYM Group, said that the Quebec boxing fans will see a memorable bout. "It is the 8th show of our series "Rapides and Dangereux" (Fast and Dangerous), and Jesus Gonzales is certainly the most dangerous visitor fighter recruited for our series so far," said Yvon Michel. "Adonis knows that he it will be the biggest test of his career. But, we know how much he is determined to become IBF champion of the world this year."

Stevenson is NABA, NABO and IBF Intercontinental champion. Gonzales was NABF champion last year. They are both southpaws.
