New Date For Calzaghe vs. Jones
The 12th Of Never... And That's A Long Long Time

The "biggest" news to hit boxing over the last 48 hours is the unsubstantiated report that Joe Calzaghe has once again injured one of his notoriously brittle hands and the scheduled September fight with Roy Jones has been postponed and a November date is now being unceremoniously thrown out there.

Hogwash!

According to an insider familiar with both camps it looks like this fight won't see the light of day in 2008 and the chances of it coming to fruition in 2009 depend solely on the outcome of the proposed Kelly Pavlik vs. Bernard Hopkins catch weight battle.

In simple English, if Kelly beats Bernard as many expect, the next fight on the plate for Calzaghe will be with Pavlik, ipso facto, Roy Jones Jr. will get put on the proverbial backburner.

Let's break this all down and you will agree this makes perfect sense.

It's possible Calzaghe has been told (and rightly so) that Jones is too big, strong & quick for him and could beat him…maybe knock him out. Plus Jones already has several losses, while Pavlik on the other hand has a perfect record and is a young lion and budding superstar, a huge enticement for Calzaghe.

Most important of all, HBO has had a sub-par year and is sporting a dull fall lineup loaded with questionable PPV's. The prospect of showcasing Pavlik – who has yet to ignite World wide recognition – with a British superstar on World Championship Boxing and not another PPV, would breathe fresh air into the as of now, mediocre lineup. Should Pavlik win, he’s only 27 and has a lot of years to add a new star to an HBO lineup filled with aging warriors like Oscar De La Hoya, Bernard Hopkins & Shane Mosley. HBO has also lost three perennial stars recently with Arturo Gatti retiring, and Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera over the hill. Calzaghe, meanwhile, is no spring chicken, and Ricky Hatton doesn’t figure to stick long.

In contrast, Jones is a dead end and has already worn out his welcome at HBO. Why promote him? Why let him be the one who beats Calzaghe, especially after all the wrangling Roy & the network have been through?

Pavlik makes sense. And hey, he can always fight Jones after Calzaghe, presuming he wins.

Calzaghe got lousy reviews for beating an over the hill Hopkins. He doesn’t want to look like he is just fighting has-beens. And if he beats Roy in another boring slapfest he will be in store for more bashing and ridicule, as will the network.

After 22 defenses Joe has plenty of money and even though he wants to ca$h in, he is also concerned about solidifying his legend.

No question Team Calzaghe sees Pavlik as a fighter with holes. Pavlik's defense is suspect and his high volume punching leaves him wide open for a precision puncher/slapper like Joe. Or at least that is what Enzo would like to tell you.

Meanwhile the validity of Calzaghe's latest injury is up in the air and speculation that a lawsuit brought on by Calzaghe's former promoter Frank Warren, may have played a role in the fight being pushed back. HBO has a longstanding rule that it will not televise a fight if a lawsuit is pending on one of the fighters.

Both Pavlik and HBO are hungry. Look for the network to add an aging Welsh lion to Pavlik’s menu.
