Margarito Dismantles Cotto
dismantle (dĭs-măn'tl): To put an end to in a gradual systematic way

For those of my peers (and from what I hear, the HBO Commentators) who somehow didn’t see what the New WBA 147 pound Champion Antonio Margarito was doing to the dethroned Miguel Cotto in the early stages of the Top Rank promoted fight on Saturday night, I direct you to the above definition from Freedictionary.com

The 10,477 in the house at The MGM on Saturday night witnessed one of the greatest wars to come down the I-15 turnpike since the first Corrales-Castillo affair, two strong and determined fighters with a game plan, one that worked and one that failed miserably down the stretch.

For Cotto the plan was to stick hard and move, stay elusive, get in and out, but more than anything, stay out of Margarito’s thunderous pocket of destruction. For Margarito the plan was pressure, pressure and more pressure. Follow that up by never taking a backward step and every time Cotto gets close make him pay severely.

Margarito’s plan worked to perfection and while Cotto did have his shining moments in the fight, his game plan had a flaw, there where those brief moments that he got too close to Margarito, and like the definition tells you my friends, the end would come in a gradual and systematic way.
From the opening bell it was obvious this was going to be a very aggressively fought scrap and both guys were dishing out good punishment right away. With some impressive combination punching Cotto took the hard fought round but it came at a price as Margarito got in some shots that would eventually pay dividends down the road… Gradual & Systematic.

Like any good investor, Margarito put a huge deposit into his account in Round 2 that came via some wicked uppercuts that bloodied up, if not broke Cotto’s nose, something that would plague him the rest of the night…Gradual & Systematic.

Over the next 3 rounds Cotto did his best work and was landing a good number of clean shots that impressed the crowd, but while Cotto was landing Margaito was still sneaking in those inside uppers to the nose and digs to the body, that although were not impressing the masses nor winning him these rounds, the blows once again were piling up and earning interest that was compounding with each and every round…Gradual & Systematic.
The fight was getting to the half way point and if Margarito had yet taken one backwards step someone needs to point it out to me. On the flip side I wondered to myself, “Certainly Cotto doesn’t think he can win this fight on his heels and in retreat the entire night does he?”

Apparently he did and it was about to be his demise.

As if a timer went off in his head, Margarito took Round 6 as the moment to really start dropping some huge assets into his already bloated account and from this point on Cotto was in for a beat down of epic proportions.

From here and on Cotto would only win a round on one judges card and likewise on another, the third judge gave Margarito everything from Round 6 on.

By the 7th round Cotto’s face was becoming an absolute mess and Margarito’s fire power was in full effect. How Cotto found the will to rally in rounds 7 -9 is far beyond me, but the fact is he did give it everything he had, but it was just becoming more than even he could believe and his face showed it…Gradual & Systematic.
It’s round 10 I am not even sure where the blood is coming from now. Is it Cotto’s nose? Is it Cotto’s mouth? Is it from both places? And what about all the blood on Margarito? Is any of it his or is it just overflow from Cotto’s injuries? I guess the answer was irrelevant because just when you thought he couldn’t possibly serve up any more punishment, he did. Margarito was flat out putting a whipping on Cotto now I have to ask myself how the soon to be ex-champ could weather the storm? It is a true testament to his warrior’s mindset. Make no bones about it though, Margarito was grinding Cotto into powder now…Gradual & Systematic.

It’s Round 11 and it looks like Margarito is ready to cash in on some very wise investments. With the fury that could only be produced from Tornado like winds, Margarito was all over Cotto and this time Miguel’s only defense was to take a knee and ponder his bleak situation. Having collected what was left of his thought’s Cotto got up to give it one more go.

Let me stop right here and tip my hat to Cotto for getting up to face more of Margarito’s fury. Never let it be said that Cotto is anything but a valiant warrior, even in the face of defeat.
Throwing all caution to the wind Cotto would get caught up in The Tornado again and just as before, Cotto was forced to take a knee. This time Miguel would not be able to fight on though as his corner men jumped on the apron and threw in the proverbial towel. It was the right thing to do.

The dismantling was complete; the gradual & systematic destruction of Miguel Cotto was accomplished.

Margarito turned to his corner with jubilation and the party was on. He told everyone he was going to defeat Cotto and whether you believed him or not beforehand, you had to give him his props now.

The most feared man at 147 pounds just became a 3 time Welterweight Champ and no one can ever take that away from him.

How hardly anyone at neither ringside nor the HBO broadcast team didn’t see right away what Margarito was doing early is beyond me. Maybe they never spent anytime in the ring. Oh sure, Lampley has had a domestic beat down on his ledger (allegedly) but that hardly counts as ring experience. But seriously guys, when the crowd reacts to everything thrown, remember, they know less than you, maybe those punches are not what they seem, and maybe the ones that are doing the real damage are going unnoticed by everyone but Cotto and the few who do have a keen eye for the sport. I challenge you to watch that HBO replay next week with the sound off, your mouths shut and your eyes wide open. You might be surprised at all that early work Margarito was doing while you were busy singing the praises of Cotto’s movement and speed.

What’s next is anybodies guess right now but “Tony’s” $tock just blew through the roof, so before you think he won’t get a shot at that Major Golden payday you had better think again.

Obviously it’s already on Margarito’s mind. In one of his first post fight quotes Margarito said, “Oscar De La Hoya is one of the best. If he comes through with his promise, we can give Mexicans a true battle.”

The ball’s in your court now Oscar, how about keeping that promise?
