Como Se Dice…”Showtime Really Put The Screws To Shane?”
As some of you may know I wrote a piece last week chastising Showtime for an apparent rip job they announced they were going to air on Saturday night. A press release gave us every indication that they would air footage showing Mosley begging to get out of the fight with Pacquiao somewhere around the tenth round. If you saw the Fight Camp 360 you know that’s exactly what they did.
Responses to my blog either agreed or not with my take, but the fact was I felt it was a way to save face for their horrendous PPV buy many boxing fans bought into.
Whatever the case may be let me share a phone call I received shortly after it aired on Saturday. The call came from one of our correspondents, Cesar Garcia who himself is a scrappy pro fighter here in Los Angeles.
Garcia said, “You know Trillo, I read your article and thought it was a bit over the top but after watching Fight Camp I think you may be on to something!”
Having not yet seen the video I asked Garcia to explain. He said, “Around the 10th round they show Mosley’s girlfriend Bella Gonzalez get up and yell something in Spanish and the translation they put up was dead wrong. In Spanish she says, Papi vamonos, Papi vamanos! Le Viene que meter su Fu..ing piñaso!” Their translation read, “Baby let’s go! He’s making you his fu..ing bitch!”
“That’s not what she said,” claimed Garcia. She said, “Baby let’s go Baby let’s go, You have to fu..ing put it on him!”
Garcia then said, “At first I thought you were just being an overly critical media guy but when I saw this…I think you are right! I went back and played that over and over again to see if I was wrong, but that is what I heard. When my girl came home I had her listen to it and she agreed, she said the Showtime translation was way off too.” Garcia questioned Showtimes intention for this airing now as well.
I thanked Garcia and told him I would watch.
The footage was exactly as he said.
Not having a firm grasp on Spanish I contacted our ace writer in Puerto Rico Luis Cadiz and asked him if he would listen to it and tell me what he heard. Luis called me when he got home and listened to it for the first time as we were on the phone. Cadiz agreed and said basically the same thing. Cadiz said he heard her say, “Daddy get him, Daddy get him, You have to give him an fu..ing beating!”
I thanked Luis and pondered what they told me to try to come to some conclusion.
As I look at everything in it’s entirety I can now say that not only did Showtime throw Mosley under the bus, but after they ran over him they threw it in reverse and ran back over him just to make sure their point was clear… it was Mosley’s fault the fans got ripped off, not theirs. To add salt to the wound his girlfriend was horrifically misquoted and it only makes matters worse for Shane.
You can do with that information as you will, but I am sticking to my guns. Mosley was made a scapegoat for the PPV that wasn’t worth the $64 many boxing fans shelled out.
Other than a quick view of Mosley’s post fight foot blister the 15 minute piece drug a sure fire Hall of Famer threw the mud. We all saw the fight and know exactly what happened that night, we didn’t need this smear campaign, and quite frankly in my opinion, neither did Shane.

I really don’t care about shanes feelings.this isn’t mma, you can’t tap out when it gets to ruff. I have always been a shane fan but I will never pay to see him fight again.
Bottom line is everybody knew this was going to be a bad fight because Shane is shot, but Showtime was so thrilled to get Pacquiao it put on a bad fight and then shifted the blame to Shane. Anybody with a brain who had watched Shane’s last two fights saw he has lost his speed and power. So how in hell is he supposed to deal with the fastest hands on the planet? Good story. Stay on it.
this fight never should have happened. There is a reason HBO didn’t want it SHOWTIME should take all the blame.
That’s what I am saying!
I think the fault lies with both Showtime and Mosley.
Mosley promised the fans a fight and talked about how disrespected he felt because the odds were 8 to 1. Mosley should get the majority of the blame because his job is to fight not ride bikes and at the end of the day he let the fans down. Basically, he talked a great game on fight camp 360 and hyped the fight up as much as he could so people/fans would buy the fight which increased his paycheck. I don’t feel bad that showtime is blaming him. Mosley went on many interviews talking about how he could beat Manny and even personally talked to Bob Arum to make the fight happen. Why shouldn’t showtime and the fans blame Mosley? He got paid a lot of money for that marathon of a show.
I will say shame on Showtime as well because anyone who is a fight fan knows Mosley is shot and needs to retire. They should have expected this outcome and never put the fight together. Mosley can no longer compete at that level. Shane’s last two fights demonstrated his abilities. Showtime proceeded to hype a fight that they knew was not going to be great and the people bought into the hype. The truth is showtime did not need to go on the offensive blaming Mosley. They should have taken the high road and moved on. Everyone knows Shane ran all night and should be held accountable. I believe the fans do hold Mosley more responsible than showtime at least I do. Perhaps this is a good lesson for showtime to learn. You can shine a turd because no matter how much you want it to shine its still a turd.
Right on Ronnie
Shane has been pouring some sugar on it ever since he tore a tendon in his calf.
