More Matthysse & Notes

Monday, June 27th, 2011
By William Trillo

Although the majority of boxing fans who saw the fight on Saturday night and agree that Devon Alexander was given a gift there seems to be some that think Lucas Matthysse has no reason to complain because he took a rest in the ninth round. Looking at the fight in it’s entirety I can not agree with that assumption.  Even if you give Devon that round you still have to come up with 6 more rounds that he won. Given he was on the seat of his pants early and was holding to the bitter end, I just do not see how that is possible.

Robbery, Assault & Battery!

HBO Crew

Am I the only one who thought the 3 man crew of Merchant, Papa and Jones did a fine job? This was the first fight in a long time that we didn’t have to hear Lampley or Kellerman stepping all over everyone. If the HBO brass is looking at things objectively they should really consider using these 3 for ALL their boxing telecasts.

Answer For Hank Lundy

During the ESPN broadcast on Friday night Hammering Hank Lundy sent Teddy Atlas a text message asking why John Molina will not give him a rematch. Although Atlas didn’t have an answer, I do. As I recall before Lundy’s loss to Molina he was talking a serious amount of undeserved trash towards Molina and until he got dropped in the fight he remained just as disrespectful. The fact of the matter is Molina went into Lundy’s home town and spanked the big mouthed fighter, he really has no reason to give Lundy another sniff.

Lucas Matthysse Lost?

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

By William Trillo

I was going to wait until Monday morning to spout off about the victory by Devon Alexander on Saturday night but after numerous text messages and phone calls that all said Matthysse was robbed, I figured I would give my quick views.

If my math is correct the judge from Puerto Rico gave Devon 7 rounds (96-93). Is he trying to tell us Matthysse only won three rounds? And that’s with Alexander going down from a clean right hand once.

That’s hogwash.

Even Devon’s hometown crowd in St. Louis booed when the scores were read. It’s pretty clear to anyone that witnessed this fight that Alexander got a pure gift in St. Louis.

It’s really a shame for Matthysse was ripped off again. This is a fighter who brings everything into the ring and on Saturday night he brought way more than Devon. Go look at the punchstats, it wasn’t even close.

More Mail Pouch! Thoughts on Canelo’s Foe Ryan Rhodes

Friday, June 17th, 2011

By William Trillo

3 letters for the Mail Pouch in the same week?

That is easily an all time record. Throw in my 12 Twitter followers and it’s just a matter of time before I get my own talk show….right?  :)

Here is a great perspective on this weekends Canelo Alvarez vs. Ryan Rhodes title scrap.

Dear William,

Most commentators seem to think it’s a foregone conclusion Alvarez is going to beat Ryan Rhodes without even breaking a sweat then move on to bigger and better fights. They may be in for a shock.

It’s true Rhodes is 34 and hasn’t been very active for the past 18 months or so. It’s also a fact the fight is taking place at altitude.

Even at this early stage, Alvarez is a known quantity in Mexico and America. His fights have been on TV often enough for anyone who’s interested to be aware of his strengths and weaknesses. I doubt that is the case with Rhodes.

To get an idea of how Rhodes fights, I recommend you see his bout for the European light middleweight title with Jamie Moore. Rhodes got hit with every punch in the book by a very hard-hitting, world-ranked opponent. He weathered the storm and by the fourth had started landing his own combinations. After a wild couple of rounds, Rhodes knocked out Moore in the 7th.

His best friend in boxing has always been Naseem Hamed. They had the same trainer and similar styles. They both land very hard shots from almost any angle and can keep it up for 12 rounds. Forget Hamed’s last few fights when he stopped training properly. For several years he was the best featherweight in the world. Ryan Rhodes is not quite as good, but he’s still capable of beating any light middleweight on his day. He knows it’s his last chance.

Alvarez must be the favourite. Form and hometown advantage are in his favour. I doubt he’s ever faced anyone who can punch as hard and as often as Rhodes. I predict both fighters will go down at least once in the fight. The challenger’s response to being knocked down is predictable. He’s had to get off the floor to knock people out more than once. What will happen when Alvarez gets hit clean on the chin by a true knockout puncher? That reactin will probably decide the outcome of the fight.

We’ll know if I’m right or wrong soon enough.

Regards,

David

Thanks David. I was looking forward to this fight although I wasn’t that familiar with Rhodes.

If what you say is true then I know why reports are surfacing that Richard Schaefer is shaking in his boots!

Mail Pouch Thoughts On “Chicanito”

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011
By William Trillo

The death of Champion Genaro Hernandez touched many in the boxing world and I think this letter is a great example of how he touched so many lives:
Hey Bill,

Just thought I’d drop a line to talk about Genaro.  I first met Genaro several years ago when I was being coached by John Montes.  John used to be the cut man for Genaro.  I used to go train in Los Angeles at the gym over off the 5 frwy and Caesar Chavez Blvd.  That’s where I met his brothers Rudy and Victor.  I thought they were all good dudes. They always cracked me up in the gym.  They were always cutting each other down and making fun of each other.  They were hilarious and kept the mood in the gym fun.  I remember watching Genaro spar with different guys and thinking, “Dam he’s good.”  In between rounds Rudy would be telling him to do different things and he was always saying, “Ok ok.”  And Rudy would answer, “Quit saying ok and just do it!’  Genaro would look over and grin with that big ol’ smile of his.  It was always a good time.

After he retired, I knew he lived in Mission Viejo and I worked in that city, so often I’d stop by and visit.  Just to say hi and see if he remembered me.  He was always very hospitable.  Sometimes he was training guys in his garage and other times we’d sit in his house and just catch up.  Of all the champs I ever met, he never would turn a fan away.  It seemed he always made time, even if just a minute to say hi.  Fortunately, I got to know him a little better than some.  Because I love boxing so much, he was a champ you could always use as an example of how the sport wasn’t corrupt.  At least you knew he wasn’t.  I guess this is just my way of saying I’m going to miss him.  I’m going to miss stopping by and talking stories with him.  I never came anywhere close to his level of the “Sweet Science,” but he never let you feel that way. My warmest regards to the Hernandez family.

Just thought I’d express my thoughts.  R.I.P. Champ.

Robert Toyer

Thanks Robert,

Your thoughts on Hernandez are heartfelt and I am glad you shared them with us. Thanks for your continued support.

Lateef Kayode Takes Some Lumps In The Mail Pouch

Monday, June 13th, 2011

By William Trillo

Hey Billy,   Its Erik.  I have been at Chumash for Kayode’s last two fights.  He lost that fight back in February, but the judges gave it to him.  The crowd went nuts when they read the decision.  Last night he looked bewildered against that “too smooth” guy.  Kayode won the fight but looked like shit.  That dude he beat was way past his prime, probably 20 pounds overweight.  Maybe Kayode is the best in a division of bums or they just keep pushing him because he trains with Freddie Roach.  He will never be a big draw.

You can tell that he is well trained, but he is not a fighter.  No instincts.

Just my two cents.

I hope all is well with you. Erik

Hey Erik,

Thanks for chiming in.

I must admit I didn’t see the Shobox show on Friday night as I was at a concert in Las Vegas.

I know you are an avid boxing fan so I trust your thoughts on the fight are dead on. I had a feeling that the press releases sent out with results from Friday nights card put a slanted spin on Lateef’s performance. I agree 100% that he lost in the fight previous to this one. I watched that show and was just as dismayed by the judges scoring as you were.

Frankly, since Kayode was suspended in California for coming up dirty on a post fight drug test I have been soured by the claims made about his “power”.

It’s no surprise that with Freddie Roach in his corner he is being taken more seriously than he would otherwise. Freddie is a proven trainer and I am sure he has been helpful in Kayode’s rise.

It’s time for Kayode to step up the level of competition and then we will see if he is truly the fighter we are led to believe. Until then I see him as a good B fighter at best. I appreciate your input and look forward to your boxing views in the future.

Como Se Dice…”Showtime Really Put The Screws To Shane?”

Monday, June 6th, 2011
By William Trillo

As some of you may know I wrote a piece last week chastising Showtime for an apparent rip job they announced they were going to air on Saturday night. A press release gave us every indication that they would air footage showing Mosley begging to get out of the fight with Pacquiao somewhere around the tenth round. If you saw the Fight Camp 360 you know that’s exactly what they did.

Responses to my blog either agreed or not with my take, but the fact was I felt it was a way to save face for their horrendous PPV buy many boxing fans bought into.

Whatever the case may be let me share a phone call I received shortly after it aired on Saturday. The call came from one of our correspondents, Cesar Garcia who himself is a scrappy pro fighter here in Los Angeles.

Garcia said, “You know Trillo, I read your article and thought it was a bit over the top but after watching Fight Camp I think you may be on to something!”

Having not yet seen the video I asked Garcia to explain. He said, “Around the 10th round they show Mosley’s girlfriend Bella Gonzalez get up and yell something in Spanish and the translation they put up was dead wrong. In Spanish she says, Papi vamonos, Papi vamanos! Le Viene que meter su Fu..ing piñaso!”  Their translation read, “Baby let’s go! He’s making you his fu..ing bitch!”

“That’s not what she said,” claimed Garcia. She said, “Baby let’s go Baby let’s go, You have to fu..ing put it on him!”

Garcia then said, “At first I thought you were just being an overly critical media guy but when I saw this…I think you are right! I went back and played that over and over again to see if I was wrong, but that is what I heard. When my girl came home I had her listen to it and she agreed, she said the Showtime translation was way off too.” Garcia questioned Showtimes intention for this airing now as well.

I thanked Garcia and told him I would watch.

The footage was exactly as he said.

Not having a firm grasp on Spanish I contacted our ace writer in Puerto Rico Luis Cadiz and asked him if he would listen to it and tell me what he heard. Luis called me when he got home and listened to it for the first time as we were on the phone. Cadiz agreed and said basically the same thing. Cadiz said he heard her say, “Daddy get him, Daddy get him, You have to give him an fu..ing beating!”

I thanked Luis and pondered what they told me to try to come to some conclusion.

As I look at everything in it’s entirety I can now say that not only did Showtime throw Mosley under the bus, but after they ran over him they threw it in reverse and ran back over him just to make sure their point was clear… it was Mosley’s fault the fans got ripped off, not theirs. To add salt to the wound his girlfriend was horrifically misquoted and it only makes matters worse for Shane.

You can do with that information as you will, but I am sticking to my guns. Mosley was made a scapegoat for the PPV that wasn’t worth the $64 many boxing fans shelled out.

Other than a quick view of Mosley’s post fight foot blister the 15 minute piece drug a sure fire Hall of Famer threw the mud. We all saw the fight and know exactly what happened that night, we didn’t need this smear campaign, and quite frankly in my opinion, neither did Shane.

Is Showtime Throwing Shane Under The Bus?

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

By William Trillo

This week Showtime sent out a press release announcing they will be showing some “shocking” footage from the recent Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley fight. The press release provided a link that showed video footage of Mosley in between rounds telling his trainer Nazzim Richardson to stop the fight because he was unable to move. It’s video that will surely haunt Mosley for a long time.

The question is why is Showtime effectively throwing Mosley under the bus?

Could it be they are trying to save face after the boxing public was forced to pay some $64 for a fight that was less than a sparring session? Could it be that after hearing the reaction from dissatisfied fans that Showtime is trying to say, “Look, it wasn’t us who ripped you off. Blame Mosley.”

Showtime will air the Post Fight Camp 360 along with their Super Six Semi-Final bout this weekend and if the press release and video is any indication of things to come it’s pretty apparent that Showtime will attempt to point the finger of blame directly in Shane’s direction.

Had Showtime done their homework they may not be in the position of laying blame on someone else’s shoulders.

Did they not see the dismal performance by Shane against Sergio Mora in a draw? Did they not see a preview of things to come when Mosley bounced away from Mayweather for 10 rounds? Did they not see Shane struggle with Ricardo Mayorga for most of that fight until Mayorga gassed out and collapsed? Even then Mosley quickly went to the foot blisters card. Had they looked at this realistically they may not have been so eager to go all “carnival barker” for this show.

Furthermore, Mosley is a sure fire Hall of Famer and was a consummate gentleman during this promotion, out of respect doesn’t he deserve a little better treatment than this?

Trust me, Sugar is going to get more than his fair share of lumps from fans coming off this dismal performance. The last thing he needs is the televising network to pile on.

But it’s too late now, Mosley is getting hammered in chat rooms and blogs across the internet and the show hasn’t even aired yet.

I am not sure why Team Mosley allowed themselves to be mic’d up, but I know it’s a decision they regret now. In all honesty I doubt other corners will allow themselves such up close and personal coverage from now on.

And rightly so.

Don’t kid yourselves. This is not the first time a fighter has looked for a way out of a fight in between rounds and it most certainly won’t be the last. Yes, we expect much more from our Champions, but seriously, until you have a fighter bouncing leather off your face you are in no position to judge, never mind completely expose a struggling fighter who can’t defend himself against a superior foe.

Were the PPV fans ripped off that night? In a word, yes.

We had Fight Camp 360′s shoved down our throats and it made it hard for a lot of people not to buy into the “Snake Oil” Showtime was shilling.

So I guess…props to you Showtime for getting everyone to pay $64 for that phony elixir. But shame on you for looking for a way to absolve yourselves from all wrongdoing now that the Castor Oil has worked it’s way through the system and left us all feeling a bit crappy.

If by chance Showtime attempts to show Mosley in a positive light I will admit my error on Monday, but if they attempt to throw Mosley under the bus as I suspect, trust me, I will have more to say about that as well.
