Thumbs Up Or Thumbs Down?

The boxing weekend could not have got off to a worse start. Before the weekend of fights could even begin we were told that Rafael Marquez slammed his hand in a truck door and his thumb was injured so badly that the scheduled September 18th fight with Juan Manuel Lopez was postponed indefinitely. With any luck the fight will take place in 4-5 weeks, but that leaves fight fans little choice but to get their boxing fix on The Mexican Holiday weekend by watching the September 18th PPV card from Los Angeles.
Truthfully I was hoping that Yuriorkis Gamboa, who is fighting on September 11th in Las Vegas would have been moved up to fill the Marquez void, but no such luck.
Instead of watching a world title fight on free Showtime fight fans are now left to purchase the PPV feed offered up by HBO that features Shane Mosley vs. Sergio Mora in a non title bout.
Thumbs Up Or Thumbs Down?
As for the fights that did take place, Heavyweight Tomasz Adamek took on Michael Grant on a nominally priced PPV card from New Jersey on Saturday night. This was without a doubt going to be a testing ground for Adamek. If successful, the Polish fighter with a strong USA fan base would have proven he is ready to take on either Klitschko.
Adamek won, but mixed reviews are coming in from a variety of sources.
Personally I think Adamek showed he is an exciting fighter who can take a punch and move around with the big boys successfully. He also showed a crack in his defense that leaves him open for retaliation. The cuts over both his eyes speak to that. My take is that in a world full of boring and sloppy heavyweights Adamek will be a breath of fresh air and I look forward to whatever his next challenge will be. The trouble is, many think Tomasz laid an egg on Saturday night and although he won all he proved is he will not fare well when he takes the next step forward.

Yeah the Marquez injury takes away a fight any fight fan would look forward to. As for the pay per view fight on the 18th mora vs mosely. Im personally can’t wait for that night of boxing but not for the main event. The undercard to that fight features victor ortiz vs vivian harris, saul alveraz vs carlos baldimore and david roldela another exicting fighter from oxnard on the card. I paid and extra 30 more dollars then I would have spent on pay per view and got amazing seats to this event at staples. I think it should be a fun night of boxing with some young fighters we will learn were there future is going with these fights.
Yes Jeff,
For those in the L.A. area who can attend the live event, this is a good deal. But expecting people to shell out 49 bucks for PPV is a just wrong. This weekends fight put on by Main Events was $29.99, that was a great price and more promoters should follow suit. I don’t want to hear about buying a case of Tecate and get a refund on the PPV either. A close friend of mine did that a few months back and still has not been reimbursed.
yeah 49 dollars for the pay per view is stupid. I can’t believe this didn’t land on HBO but thats Golden Boy for you. Plus the main event and undercard should both have great fights. It seems lately that the either the undercard is good and the main event is a dud fight or the other way around. I hope more big fights would have undercards like this. Lets go Victor and David Go OXNARD and get Margarito outta here.
Bill,
I think those cracks have been there since the Cunningham fight, and probably before. What I like about Adamek is that he stays in the fight. He is willing to take the punches, and at the same time he is answering those blows. Do I think he will hold the title some day? I really don’t know. But for me, he has brought back some excitement to a division that had left me cold.
Tim
Agreed Agreed Agreed!
And let us not forget this guy is SHOWING UP IN TOP SHAPE!
Why?
Because he takes his career seriously.
Tomasz’s work ethic is without question and he should be embraced from sea to shing sea!!
As long as the Klitschko’s have a strangle hold on The heavies it’s going to be tough to get a belt, but that won’t stop Adamek from his quest and I applaud the Polish Warrior for the strides he has made.
