Golden Boy Promotions Suspended By The State of New York’s Athletic Commission
By William Trillo
On Sunday June 6th, 2010 the well respected boxing writer Thomas Hauser wrote a piece for Secoundsout.com titled ‘Why”. In the article Hauser questioned how the money HBO agreed to underwrite in total purses for Ortiz-Campbell of $750,000 turned into a paltry $250,000 in purses for both fighters combined. What happened to the unaccounted for $500,000? Where did that money go, and why?
Late this past Saturday evening another respected writer, George Kimball of the Sweetscience.com broke the news to what might be an answer to that “Why?” in his piece titled, EXCLUSIVE: Golden Boy Promotions Suspended By NY Commission.
In the article Kimball explains, “The disciplinary action came as a result of some creative accounting with the co-featured bout of that night’s show, in which Kansas prospect Victor Ortiz won a unanimous decision over 38 year-old former lightweight champion Nate Campbell. Although HBO had agreed to underwrite a total purse of $750,000 for the fight, Campbell was paid just $125,000, Ortiz ($100,000) even less. The half-million dollar discrepancy was apparently concealed from both of the boxers…”
The legal and moral ramifications of this suspension can be very costly for Golden Boy and if allegations are true this could prove to be the beginning of the end for a company that is percieved as the top dog in Boxing Promotions world wide.
At this point it’s not even fair to speculate as to what might have or what could have happened here, but Golden Boy has a lot of explaining to do. Something doesn’t add up…literally. I’m sure that over the next few months they will get a chance to explain themselves, but in the meantime they can expect a lot of stones to be hurled in their general direction.
For the moment you will get none of my usual sarcasm or levity about this subject because quite frankly, this isn’t funny! Boxing gets more than it’s fair share of abuse on it’s own, it didn’t need this apparent $500,000 discrepency to tarnish it an further.

That COO from GBP David Ikowitz was investigated along with the General Manager of the Morongo Casino for the same thing only with Casino money. The Katsidis fight against Casamyor was supposed to cost the Casino $125k but they ended with a figure closer to $400k. The GM was fired and shows no longer happen at this casino.
Thanks again GBP for screwing everything up.
