Question: Klitschko vs. Haye In September? Answer: It’s Not Happening, Just Like I Told You

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010
By William Trillo

As I told you in my blog last week, the erroneous report that David Haye taking on Wladimir Klitschko was close to being wrapped up turned out to be nothing more than monkey business. Even more comical than the report was that two days later Adam Booth, who maybe thought Wladimir was serious, turned his attention to Wlad’s brother Vitali and stated they would rather fight him instead. Sound familiar?

In the meantime Wladimir’s mandatory challenger Alekander Povetkin’s promoter went on record this week saying the would offer Wlad 10.5 million dollars to take the fight to Russia. Something tells me we can expect this deal to get done.

This will leave Team Haye to do what they do best, and that’s bark about who they want to fight instead. Now they are blowing smoke about taking on the winner of Ruslan Chagaev vs. Kali Meehan. My guess is Haye wants no part of Chagaev and is hoping Meehan somehow gets the victory here. What is more likely though is Haye taking on his fellow countryman/underachiever Audley Harrison in what will be the biggest “who cares” fight of the summer.

The Best 140 Performance Last Weekend

In a weekend of Jr. Welterweight stars televised over the past weekend there is one fighter who was by far put on the most impressive performance. No it wasn’t Amir Khan nor was it Victor Ortiz. In my eyes the best 140 pounder this weekend was Julio Diaz who defeated Herman Ngoudjo on ESPN’s Friday night Fights. Diaz, who many thought was past his prime, put on a great display with his unanimous decision victory. I’d like to see Diaz take on Tim Bradley in a California desert showdown in the near future.

Boff’s Pre-Emptive Strike

Monday, May 17th, 2010
By William Trillo

It came as no surprise that my most faithful (and possibly only) reader, Frank Boff, sent in this commentary before I could even write an article about this weekends fight in New York. Boff wrote:

The reality is Paulie had no chance to win since he couldn’t knock Khan out. Had he had power, they would have let it go. I hate to see Paulie counted out like that, but it was the right idea. Paulie has a long career ahead as a TV commentator. He has down tapes for the role. He really is excellent at breaking down fights and fighters. Handsome, young, PERFECT for HBO’s BAD. He and Kellerman would give Ross the younger and hipper look he craves. And the chemistry between the two, the humor could be a lot of fun.  With DiBella having created BAD while head of boxing at HBO, he still has strong ties to the network. DiBella brought up Paulie’s desire to be a commentator in post-fight video interview. He must retire. DiBella said he could not beat the upper echelon guys at 140 and he doubted Paulie would want to be a gatekeeper or an opponent. I say he will retire. He’d also be great in some TV reality show or sitcom appealing to twenty-somethings. If he hadnt broken the hand nine times and had all the surgeries, one wonders who good he could have been if he had power as an added tool. A gallant, tough kid and one of my favorites.

Kudos to Boff for reading my mind. Referee Steve Smoger who has long been known as a fighters ref for giving fighters every chance to find a way to win, even in the face of sure defeat, had no choice but to halt the fight between Amir Khan and Paulie rather than let the fight go any further. Malignaggi had no chance to stop Khan and although Paulie is valiant, the right decision was made.

I truly hope Paulie can take a good long hard look at his future prospects in the 140 pound division and makes the right choice. Boff is not too far off on his assessment and I think Malignaggi has a long career left in boxing, but it should be behind the mic.

Bailing Haye?

Amidst reports that a “collision” between WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (54-3, 48 KOs) against WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (24-1, 22 KO’s) is on the verge of being “wrapped up by Sunday”, a source we can only deem as very close to the negotiations told Pound4Pound.com that announcing a September match up between the two champions being days from being “wrapped up” is at best ”premature.”

Don’t Bet Against Marga”Beato”
Photos By Doroteo Arango

A few weeks before the return of Antonio Margarito I began to get numerous phone calls asking me what I thought of Margarito’s foe, Robert Garcia’s. chances. Before I could put in my two cents the interested party would answer his or her question by saying Garcia is looking good, he is kicking the crap out of Alfredo Angulo in sparring, (yeah right), and the odds that had Garcia an 8 to 1 underdog were looking pretty good.

Not having complete knowledge of Garcia, nor having been privy to the sparring beat down’s Garcia was handing to Angulo, (again I chuckle), the only advice I could give was that I wouldn’t want to be the first guy to fight Tony after his still debated suspension. I mean if ever there was a time that Margarito would want to prove his point, this was it. I said I am not in the business of telling you how to bet your money, but my feeling was Garcia had little or no chance.

As we know Tony put Garcia down in round one and then beat the hapless Garcia for the next 9 rounds leaving Garcia little else to do than to foul Margarito twice in the fight and get points deducted on each occasion.

One scorecard had Tony winning the fight 100-88…worse than a shutout!!

I wonder what the odds on that happening were?

Canelo’s So Good…
He Ranks A Division Above His Fighting Weight

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s victory against Jose Miguel Cotto was so impressive that “The Bible of Boxing”, The Ring , ranked him #10 in a weight division he has never competed in. That’s right boxing fans, “Canelo” who has made his mark in the Welterweight division is suddenly the 10th best Jr. Middle in the World…according to The Ring.

I have some research for you to do today. First, find out who promotes Alvarez. After you do that find out who owns ”The Ring”

Speaking Of Rankings
How Is Lucian Bute Not In Anyones Top 10?

Curious how names like Shane Mosley, Pongsaklek Wonjongkam & Celestino Caballero can get on “The Bible’s” top 10 Pound4Pound list but Lucian Bute, the undefeated Super Middleweight Champ who has the full attention of the suits at HBO can’t get a sniff. I would think that considering how the network is doing backflips to get Bute’s attention that by now he would at least get an honorable mention.

P.S. If Bernard Hopkins couldn’t beat that white guy Joe Calzaghe, who was at the end of his career when he beat B-Hop, what makes anyone think he has a chance with an in his prime Lucian Bute who is a quicker on his feet, faster with his hands and has 3 times the power that Calzaghe ever had?

I really believe that Hopkins has a better chance with David Haye than he does with Bute…REALLY!

In Defense Of Kermit Cintron

Monday, May 10th, 2010
By William Trillo

Within less than a minute after Kermit Cintron awkwardly rolled out of the ring and was prone on the ringside floor this past Saturday night, I could clearly hear the rumbling start from my seat in media row. “Not again”, said one voice while yet another suggested, ” He is looking for a way out!”

And yet again, for whatever reason Cintron was stuck in the middle of controversy. Clearly the most memorable of those controversies was the bout that ended in a draw with Sergio Martinez. During that fight Cintron went down from a punch and he was apparently counted out at the end of  the round. Moments later the ref changed his mind and the bout continued to it’s deadlocked end. Say what you will, this was the fault of an inept ref and not Cintron although he took more than his fair share of written abuse after that fight.

Admittedly, I even took Cintron to task for his meltdown in Los Angeles after his victory over Jesse Feliciano and I regret that after doing some research on Cintron and his rough early years. Kermit had a tough childhood.

As a young boy he had to watch his Mother die of Cancer. After her death his Father who was unable to care for Kermit and his siblings sent them to an Uncle in America. The Father kept in contact with his children but when Kermit turned 13 his Father died of a heart attack and it left him an orphan.

To find a constructive outlet for his troubles Cintron turned to boxing and wrestling. Cintron was a High School stand out in wrestling and was offered College scholarships but a knee injury forced him to stop wrestling and make boxing his full time job.

As we know, Cintron became a very accomplished professional boxer and has been in many huge marquee match ups. The first of which was his KO loss to Antonio Margarito, Cintrons first loss. After that Cintron put on another run of victories and was seemingly back on track to a title.

Emanuel Steward, Kermit’s new trainer was so convinced Cintron was on the right track that it spurned me to pen an article featuring Steward claiming he would train Cintron to beat a flawed Floyd Mayweather.

Soon thereafter came the Felciano fight and shortly thereafter Cintron and Steward went their separate ways. Then came the Margarito rematch which went much as the first fight. In hindsight, knowing what we know now, Cintron claims that Margarito’s gloves were loaded then and he does not accept those loses as legitimate.

In recent times Cintron has had the aforementioned draw with Martinez, who now is the WBC Middleweight Champ, followed up by his blistering and very impressive win over the rough Alfredo Angulo who now holds an interim 154 title belt.

Fast forward to this past Saturday night and once again Cintron found himself in the unenviable spot of once again being second guessed by the media for his falling out of the ring, and eventual bizarre loss to Paul Williams.

Yes, Kermit has had his share of turmoil in the ring, but before any of us ever again second guess his heart or what is going on with him upstairs, I ask that you remember that this kid went through more than most of us could imagine as a child and instead of turning it into an excuse to fail he turned it into a reason to perform at the highest level and for the most part he has succeeded. And much to his credit, when he did not succeed or come out on top he has not quit, but rather has put his nose back to the grindstone and has always found a way to scratch and claw his way back up, almost to the very top.

Once again Cintron has come up just a hair short, but if history tells us anything we can rest assured Cintron will do whatever it takes to pick himself up and make another attempt to get to the top of that mountain again.

“Money” Where His Mouth Is

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Love him or hate him it’s very hard to deny Floyd Mayweather Jr. his just due after his dominant unanimous decision victory over Shane Mosley on Saturday night. Prior to running his record to 41-0 with 25 KO’s Mayweather spent an inordinate amount of time running his mouth about his greatness and how he was going to dispose of Mosley, most of that came on HBO’s hit series 24/7. And as much as many of us hated to hear it, there is nothing we can do now but humbly stand back and say that he did just as he said he would.

In his dominant victory, Mayweather showed us he is probably the most gifted technical fighter in the game today, even the talented and rapid fire Mosley was no match for Floyd’s skill on this, and possibly any other night. Another thing that was stamped in indelible ink on the memory of anyone who saw the fight is, when faced with adversity early, when cracked so hard his knee’s buckled in round 2, Mayweather found a way to weather the storm and get through the round without going down and without losing his focus. In fact the blows delivered by Mosley seemed more like a call to arms for Mayweather and it’s easy to say he went on to win every round after that, thanks in part to that early wake up call.

Yes, at times ”Pretty Boy” postured and toyed with Mosley, he even resorted to talking to him during some rounds, but it was Mosley who paid the price as he fell into Floyd’s trap and as soon as he attempted to engage in conversation, Mayweather blasted Shane in the mouth. This wasn’t the first time Shane would fall into the snare that is the “Pretty Boy” trap, and Floyd was laying bait long before the two entered the ring on Saturday night.

From the demanded pre-fight drug testing to denying fighting for the WBA belt and then entering the ring second on Saturday night, something that is always set aside for the Champion, Floyd left Mosley playing second fiddle before and after the fight. At the post fight press conference Oscar De La Hoya spoke about how Floyd gets into your head before the fight, in fact Oscar, who knows first hand of Floyd’s mind games, said Mayweather is a “Master” at this tactic.

It worked against Oscar, it worked against Shane as it also worked against some 39 other opponents and the chances are it will work again before his career is over. Many of us may not like it, but when you put together the entire package of superior skill, both mentally and physically, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is going to be a very difficult fighter to beat.

Humbly Speaking

At the post fight press conference Floyd Mayweather Jr. spoke eloquently with the charm of a humble warrior who accomplished his task but still had respect for his fallen foe. Mayweather thanked Mosley, the promoters, advertisers and even said thank you to the media even though most of us have ripped him unmercifully at times.

Years ago, just prior to his fight with Arturo Gatti, Mayweather held a luncheon with the media in Los Angeles and at that time I was taken aback at how gracious the young man was and for a moment in time I saw a side of Mayweather I hoped we would see more often.

The fact is, for the most part we have not seen the humble Mayweather but instead have been subjected to his arrogant and brash attitude he directs at whomever he deems unworthy…which is most of us.

Yet, on Saturday night almost everyone to a man left the building talking not only about Floyd’s performance in the ring but his respectful performance on the podium after the fight.

I can’t help but think that if Floyd would project that humble attitude more often he would add greatly to his fan base and maybe he would get those 3 million PPV buys that he and everyone at Golden Boy is looking for.

Memo To Promoters, Managers & Clingers On…
GET OUT OF THE SHOT!!!

One of the best photo opps’ for any fight, especially the big ones, is when the fighters square off face to face in one final stare down before the fight. It’s compelling and can make for some great and more importantly, valuable photographs. That has all changed over the past year or two as now when the fighters go nose to nose someone from the promotional team decides to stick his Pie Hole right smack in the middle of the shot.

Newsflash losers….No One Wants To See Your Hideous Grill In The Shot….NO ONE!!

This dilemma has been eating at me for quite some time now but the proverbial straw that broke this camel’s back was this weekend when our photographer sent over pictures of the weigh in face-off and right smack in the middle of the Floyd and Shane was none other than Leonard “Hot Flashes” Ellerbe.

That’s all I can take and I can take no more.

Dammit Leonard….get your smug face out of the shot! And that goes for every other Tom, Dick and Harry who wants to get in on the face-off. Unless you are one of the participants no one wants to see you.

Period!
