No Matter What You Read About Floyd vs. Shane, It’s NOT Signed, Sealed Or Delivered

I don’t know why so many websites & newspapers want to trick you to read their premature news breaker about Floyd vs.Shane being a done deal because as everyone including those writers know the fight is not officially official. Yet one look at their headlines and and you want to start making reservations for the first weekend of May in Las Vegas.
A perfect example of this smoke and mirror journalism can be found on Yahoo’s boxing main page. A quick click on that page on Saturday night and you will see a smiling Shane Mosley with the caption on the picture reading, Fight’s On. Click on the picture and you are directed to an article with the headline: Contract signed: Mosley-Mayweather set for May 1. The second paragraph of the article penned by boxing staple Kevin Iole reads: Earlier in the day, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe said that a deal had been agreed upon, as reported Thursday by Yahoo! Sports and that contracts were being drawn up. Ellerbe said Mayweather would sign the deal as soon as it was ready.
Wait a minute?
Mayweather would sign the deal as soon as it was ready?
In other words…The Fight is NOT On! Mosley-Mayweather is NOT Set for May 1!
Apparently the premature announcement is more contagious than The H1N1 virus and it is spreading twice as fast as that AKA Swine Flu. Similar headlines can be found across the World Wide Web:
Mayweather and Mosley agree to May 1 super fight
Mayweather, Mosley set to fight
Report: Mosley, Mayweather reach terms
And then every article gets about 2 sentences in before they note, “Mayweather has yet to sign his own deal agreement, but Burstein said he has been assured by the boxer’s lead advisor, Leonard Ellerbe, that the signature would come sometime “in the next two days.”
C’mon guys! Have you not seen this act before? As I recall it was in the not too distant past we were told Floyd was ready to fight before the crap hit the fan and that proposed “Set Fight” imploded.
Now I am sure all of you guys have way better sources than I do and I know you all have a much better education than yours truly as well. But with all those sources and that great education what you have failed to learn is that nothing is official when it comes to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Quite frankly, I hope you guys are right! I hope that Mayweather and Mosley do square off in the ring on May 1st. Nothing would make me happier than to see Shane bouncing leather off Pretty Boy’s face. On the other hand, nothing would make some of you happier than to see Floyd Jr. outclass Mosley and prove he is Pound4Pound on the top of the list of boxings best in recent years.
After a year that has started off with more fight cancellations than I can remember everyone in boxing, especially the fans, need a fight like this to come to it’s fruition.
But my short tem memory still works semi-decently and as I recall we were all led to believe that Pacquiao vs. Mayweather was agreed to in principle and was all but done last year. Well, it’s 2010 now and Manny is fighting Joshua Clottey on March 13th because of Maywether’s drug testing demands. So until we see Floyd Jr. standing in a ring in Las Vegas directly across from “Sugar” Shane this fight is not etched in granite….period….end of discussion.

What a hate filled article full of conjecture. What are you going to say when the presser starts this week don’t believe your eyes either. Write an article with news not hate spewing conjecture.
Jm.hammer, you are in need of a class on reading comprehension. This is not a hate-filled article as you say, it is a fact-filled, setting the record straight article in which Billy had the guts to come right out and name the scoop-crazed writer who jumped the gun. It’s about time someone did. Then Billy can get after that other scoop monger who gets all his scoops spoon-fed by promoters who want to put their version of reality out there: Dan Know-It-All Rafael. Good column. Really Jm. you need to get your nose out of Floyd’s butt. It will do you a world of good. The rest of the boxing world does not stink like Floyd. Wake up and smell the thorns.
Ellerbe, is that you posing as Jm.hammer again? If the “presser starts this week”, then that means Floyd will have finally signed, but thus far he has not, making this article as true to news as can be.
How can a fight be signed and set when one big party (ONE OF THE FIGHTERS) has yet to sign? Of course there’s hate involved when situations like that go down. Towards the fighter for one, and towards false advertising Iole on yahoo for the other.
How can a headline read “ITS ON” when it’s “almost on”? That’s called counting your chickens before the eggs hatch.
Perhaps you forgot the proposed Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight that too was “ALMOST ON”, but never happened? Need I remind you of that, Ellerbe?
Dear Jm.Hammer,
My poor boy. Your grasp of the English language needs a little work. You accuse my article of being full of conjecture. Hammer, the word conjecture means “a judgment based on inconclusive or incomplete evidence.”
At the present time the only incomplete evidence is that yet to be signed by Mayweather contract. Until it is signed the only conjecture comes from reports saying the fight is on.
And what will I say if the press conference starts next week? Apparently you didn’t read my article very well.
I said:
A. I hope you guys are right! I hope that Mayweather and Mosley do square off in the ring on May 1st.
B.everyone in boxing, especially the fans, need a fight like this to come to it’s fruition.
Hard for me to find any hate in there Jm. You appear to be a guy who has a bit of an agenda here Hammer. It’s almost as if you took the article personally…a little too personally.
If the fight does become official I will be seeing you at the “presser”
I’ll be the one with the Cheshire Cat grin!
Dear Jm.Hammer,
Your response comes off more like an overemotional irate lover of Floyd than a boxing fan. Do you have feelings for The Pretty Boy?
What is hateful here? Floyd has not signed a contract which means nothing is official. Is that so hard to understand?
i really hope this adviser guy is right and mosley fights mayweather because it is a good matchup. a bit overdue but still a good fight. i hope that guy is right and floyd signs the contact too.
I agree with jmmhammer and Rafael, the fight is on until Floyd Jr. says otherwise. I dont understand why people find it so hard to understand.
Nice santiperes, just like Leonard, when Floyd says “jump” you say “how high?” The fight is on until Floyd says otherwise? You spinless lemming, the fight is on when your Master Floyd signs the contract and not until then.
Hey Will, it’s your boy! I don’t know if you can pull old post but right after the Pac-Man vs Cotto fight before blood test were even thought of I said it here first Pac-Man vs Mayweather will never happen! So, you are 100% correct! I won’t believe Mosley vs Mayweather until the bell rings! BTW, I read the Oscar interview. Did Oscar and Floyd two guys over 32 with 40 plus fights just learn of PEDs in December of 2009???? That is what they’ll make you believe that PEDs never existed from the 90′s until December 09 because they fought all of their fights without Olympic Style Drug Testing. Why didn’t Oscar or Floyd use Olympic Testing when they fought each other???? If Oscar really wants to change things in boxing why doesn’t he simply say that ALL Golden Boy Fights from now on will have Olympic Testing???? I’ll tell you why it’s a FARCE!!! But what I can’t understand is how some in the public fell for it??? But then again we live in a country where people believed that Iraq had WMDs and were making them on a Snoop Dogg style Tour Bus!!!!
Pacquiao vs. Mayweather was on until Floyd “said otherwise” LOL, what a stupid way to look at things. Why is it so hard to understand that until contracts are signed and the fight is actually announced, again after the contracts are signed, then it means something. None of the agreements or updates or drivel that comes out of Ellerbe’s or lil Floyd’s mouth mean anything. Agreements don’t make fights happen, signed contracts do.
