Don’t be fooled by Leonard Ellerbe when he said that Floyd Mayweather Jr. has the upper hand when it comes to negotiating with Welterweight Champion Manny Pacquiao for their highly anticipated Super Fight. Ellerbe said that Floyd deserves the Lions share of the purse but coming off their most recent fights it’s clearly Pacquiao who is in the driver seat.
Boxing has been and always will be a “what have you done for me lately” game and although Floyd brought in big numbers for his September fight with Juan Manuel Marquez he was trumped by Pacquiao’s overwhelming recent performance over Miguel Cotto as that fight brought in nearly 1.5 million PPV buys.
Add in the fact that Pacquiao captured a title at 147 pounds while Mayweather’s fight was nothing more than an over glorified bout with a smaller man where no title was at stake.
Last time I checked it’s the Champion who deserves the upper hand in negotiations and the challenger should just be happy he is involved.
Sorry Floyd, but just like that limo rides you take while you scurry around Las Vegas visiting the local Clubs, you will be riding in the back seat on this one.

What you failed to mention is that Floyd has no other place to go for a big fight. Rematch with Hatton in England? Pleeeeaaassse. There isnt a single fighter out there with whom Floyd could top 1 million buys except Pacquiao. BTW, ppv numbers indicate pretty strongly that the final figure for Pac/Cotto was 1.25 million buys.
Manny will always have an upper hand in negotiations with mayweather. For example: let’s just say that Floyd avoids Manny, well the PacMan can go for a 3rd fight against Marquez, a unification bout with the winner of Mosley/Berto or even, I know it sounds a bit more far fetched but, against Margarito. Why Margarito you ask, because the Mexican public want to see one of their own KO Pacquiao… the Mexican boxer who accomplishes such a task will get a statue erected in the main Plaza of Los Toros in Mexico, the keys to the country and a national holiday! Anyway, just being funny, back to the original comment… all of the before mentioned opponents, with the exception of Marquez, are people mayweather won’t fight. He wants to be the pound for pound best fighter without fighting! Here’s an idea, have mayweather fight Paul Williams. That way he knows what it feels like being the smaller man in the ring. Paul will retire him for good, Social Security and all. I am sure that if the negotiations were right, the PacMan would even get into the ring with Paul!

Damn right Luis. Mayweather has nowhere to go. If their fight doesn’t materialize, he still WON’T fight Mosley. They’re just bluffing when they said they’re considering fighting Mosley. First off, let me make it perfectly clear that I am Luis M. Cadiz Sr., not “Luis”. I am the “Luis” that has been part of pound4pound.com for over 5 years now. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but the other Luis and I haven’t seen eye to eye before and now I haven’t changed my perspective, I think he is wrong again. There was an issue here on the island with the W.B.O. President, Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel and the defending of the welterweight title. Cotto at first objected and even said he would relinquish the title, but “Paco” bought out the rule book and said that any weight above 140 and under 148 is considered “welterweight”. “Paco” is a lawyer, he’s going to use the rules to his advantage, remember, sanctioning fees and having the W.B.O. Belt up for grabs for such an event, what more can “Paco” want? Cotto accepted the terms, made the weight and took the fight. More than what I can say for mayweather, who didn’t make weight, I dare say on purpose, so that he can have an extra advantage against the much smaller Marquez. That shows me that mayweather jr. lacks confidence in his abilities to the point where he would rather pay a fine to have an advantage against the smaller man than fight on a level field. How would mayweather jr. feel if he signs a deal with Paul Williams to fight at 147 and Paul decides to pay the price but enter at 149? The little man mayweather would bitch… yes, I said it, bitch… not complain, but bitch that Paul isn’t playing fair. Marquez fought anyway because: 1- it was his biggest pay day. 2 – if Marquez won, he scored the great upset, he had nothing to loose. 3 – Marquez has his streak of arrogance also. 4 – Marquez is the typical “Macho Man Mexicano”, don’t bitch, fight! But then you contradict yourself by questioning if it’s a welterweight championship fight or not. Now if there are conditions for example at 145 and Floyd agrees to such terms, well that’s his problem. But as he showed in his previous fight, he’s not a man of his word or a man who is sure of his talent, when he payed the fine and came in at 147 and thenrefused to weigh in again. For the most part, manyfighters tend to come in below the maximum weight limit anyway, usually registering a pound or so below. Now your other example, “I’m going to challenge Klitschko for the heavyweight title, but he has to come in at no more than 201 lbs.” Well that’s a bad example because the heavyweight limit is 200 +. We have seen many fighters go in outweighed by much, Lennox used to register around 250 pounds while Holyfield would come in at a much more muscular 210 or so pounds. That’s a 40 pound difference! If you were heavyweight you can come in at 200, 201 or even ove 300 pounds, like Valuev. Vitali would still weigh in at around 240 or 250… and still kick your butt! As far as your finishing lines: boxing a joke, thanks to people like mayweather jr. The fools who buy PPV are the ones that purchase wrestling events, not a Pacquiao fight… by the way, did you see the fight! Where? How? Did you pay for it or did you mooch in on a family member, friend or loved one to see it?

These fighters are not listed in any particlar order, the same way mayweather would not have fought anyone of them, in no particular order. Manny Pacquiao took on the same exact opponents as mayweather did in Oscar and Hatton, beating them in much more spectacular fashion and as an added bonus, took on Cotto… from the above list… and destroyed him also. Another one up for Manny in the negotiations. As I have said before, to prove one’s skills, you have to take on someone on, above or beyond your level. When did mayweather do that in the welterwights?

listen guys, boxing is boxing and it will always be boxing, i hate it when people say Mayweather is afraid of Mosley, i remember when Mayweather was interviewed by HBO (Larry Merchant) after Brusseles victory, he mentioned that he wanted to fight Mosley! and Mosley was not interested, i was reading above and i just cannot believe that people thinks Pacman will woop Mayweather. Guys the reason why Pacman was beaten by Marquez twice (yes he was beaten twice that is why they dont want the Pac vs Marq 3) is because Marquez is a pure counter puncher,Mayweather is the Genius counter puncher, have you seen how easy it is to catch Pacman with punches? i mean come on guys Cotto was even sluggish in that fight but he was catchin Pacman all the times.
Mayweather will atleast put Pacman on convas once, i dont care about anything one might say, boxing is not about beating people sometimes, it is about how you wooped those people. Now Pacman is chasing another title, Yuri Foreman for a WBA title in Super Welterweight Division (154lb) 10 March 2010 (90% possible), he is going for title #8, wow this guy is making history, Rouche says he wants Yuri, then Gayweather on Sept 2010, then they shalll retire.
Clearly its for his legacy, not yet for the fans but for his own legacy and guess what, that is acceptable,they had to make the decision.
