Almost Speechless

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Since hearing of the tragedy of Vernon Forrest’s untimely death I have been pretty much speechless. To lose the former Welter & Super weight Champ was bad enough. Then to hear how everything transpired in the moments leading up to his death really set me back. Here we are again, faced with another tragic death of a Champion, first Arguello then Gatti and now Vernon.

There are times in everyone’s life that moments seem surreal, as if this all couldn’t really be happening.  Sadly, this is not a bad dream, it’s a harsh reality of the times in which we live.

From his family to Al Haymon to Gary Shaw, Kelly Swanson and everyone who Vernon has touched with his generosity, our thoughts and prayers go out to each and everyone of you.

STATEMENT FROM ALAN HAYMON
ON VERNON FORREST

“I am deeply, deeply saddened by this senseless horrible tragedy and my heart goes out to his mother and family.  Vernon was a great fighter but much more importantly, he was a very special person outside the ring.  His charitable efforts are all well-known and documented but that was only the tip of the iceberg. Vernon was a genuinely kind-hearted, caring and supremely principled and loyal human being.  I came to know him and love him as a great friend far beyond the realm of boxing.  He was the first fighter I became involved with as an advisor and he and I had a special bond from the very beginning.  Vernon was a great human being and the world was a better place with him in it.  I will always treasure the time we spent together and I will always love him and miss him.  May God bless and keep him.”

STATEMENT FROM KELLY SWANSON
ON VERNON FORREST

WASHINGTON, DC – Sunday, July 26 – I am grief stricken to learn of the tragic death of Vernon Forrest.  Not only was he my client, he was my friend.  He gave me a wonderful opportunity when he asked me to help him tell his story both in and out of the ring beginning in 2001. The journey was terrific as not only was he a great champion, but he was a caring humanitarian who always stood up for what he believed to be the fairness of life.
Most importantly his work outside of the ring, particularly with his established foundation Destiny’s Child, which provided group housing for mentally challenged young adults in the Atlanta area, was the shining light of his life.  Seeing him with the kids was the essence of his being and showed me another side of his well-rounded and deeply passionate character.  It was my pleasure to help tell his story.

These accomplishments earned him not only the Boxing Writers Association of America 2002 Fighter of the Year award, but also their 2003 Good Guy award, a first ever feat for an active fighter in the history of the organization.

Vernon was a feisty one and always, always, spoke his mind.  It was this intense passion for truth and justice that fueled his presence, gave him character and instilled in him a mighty resolve to the end. And yet, he was such a gentleman too, always giving back to those less fortunate and appreciating what others did for him.  He would go out of his way to call and thank me profusely for the “coverage” he received.  He was a great son and brother to his mother and siblings and a wonderful father to his young son Vernon Jr.

The tragedy of his untimely death is extremely hurtful as boxing has lost another great champion and a long-standing member of our sport’s community.  I will miss him dearly and he will forever hold a very special place in my heart.  With sympathy to his family, friends and the entire boxing community, I pray for comfort for all of us during this terrible time.

Kelly Swanson

Further Information regarding funeral/memorial arrangements will be forthcoming.

STATEMENT FROM KELLY SWANSON
ON GARY SHAW

ATLANTA, GA (July 26, 2009) — Former two-division world champion VERNON FORREST was shot and killed last night in Northwest Atlanta.

“This is a tragedy beyond belief,” said Gary Shaw, who had promoted Forrest’s recent fights.  “The life of a decent caring man and a loving father has ended; a victim of senseless violence.  Speaking on behalf of myself and Al Haymon, we are in a state of shock.  We thank the media in advance for respecting our privacy and will have no further comment until we have the complete story.”

SERGIO MARTINEZ MOURNS THE LOSS OF VERNON FORREST

(July 27, 2009) WBC Junior Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez was hit extremely hard by the news that the man who preceded him as champion, Vernon Forrest, had passed away over the weekend.

The following is his statement, paying final respects to the great champion:

“Vernon Forrest was a great fighter. I always dreamed of fighting Vernon, because it has always been my goal to prove myself against the very best. This tragic news puts both my life and boxing career in perspective. Vernon and I both shared a love for children, and helping those who had become disadvantaged. This is why I did not just look up to him as a boxer, but as a human being. My thoughts are prayers are with his family, and I promise to dedicate my next fight to the memory of Vernon Forrest.” – Sergio Martinez.”

WORLD MOURNING; VERNON FORREST PASSED AWAY.
LUTO MUNDIAL POR VERNON FORREST

With profound sorrow, the World Boxing Council and its President, Jose Sulaiman, are declaring today a day of world mourning due to the tragic passing away of their dear and loyal friend, many times world champion, and WBC Peace and Concord Ambassador, Vernon Forrest, who loyally loved the green and gold belt, and was an active financial sponsor against the illness of mental handicap as well as he sponsored other associations that benefit those in need…..

A true exemplary man from the United States.

Vernon was an Olympic fighter in Barcelona, WBC Continental Americas champion, and WBC – NABF champion. After personally asking the WBC President for a title shot, he amazed the world when he won the WBC Welterweight world title by defeating the then champion, Shane Mosley, to later amaze everybody again when he defeated Mosley in the rematch. Forrest also won the WBC Superwelterweight world title, which he had to leave due to an injury, and he was preparing to recover and challenge for the WBC world title once again when he was murdered.

The WBC sends its deepest condolences to his family and friends, among whom some of them stand out: Al Haymon, his eternal manager, Charles Watson, and all the fans of the U.S.A. and the whole world.

It is truly regrettable that so many tragedies have struck boxing in this current 2009, as just recently, the also WBC world champions, Alexis Arguello, from Nicaragua, and Arturo Gatti, from Canada, went through tragedies that ended their lives.
Their bodies were said goodbye to by the WBC, by placing a world champion green and gold belt on their coffins, which was exactly the same thing done recently when Mexican fighter Raul “Raton” Macias, the top idol of Mexican people, passed away.

Sam Peter Back In The Mix

Former Heavyweight Champ Sam Peter showed up in Mexico weighing in at 243 pounds. He hasn’t been that low in 4 years. Not so coincidentally he put a serious beat down on Marcus McGee dropping him 3 times before rendering his unconscious in round 3.

Oh sure, naysayers will bark this is what Peter should have done with a guy like McGee and it really doesn’t prove a thing. To that I say Horse Hockey!

Peter now becomes the second heavyweight contender to go from an overweight mess to a legitimate challenger, Eddie Chambers being the first to listen to the fat jokes and do something about it, and now Peter.

With his new promoter in Top Rank and his rediscovered 243 pound physique, don’t be surprised to see Sam Peter make another serious run at the title of “Baddest Man On The Planet”.

The Demise of Boxing; The Omar Chavez vs. Marco Antonio Nazareth Saga

Friday, July 24th, 2009

By William Trillo

Billy,

I am surprised that more out rage or coverage over the death of Marco Antonio Nazareth at the hands of Omar Chavez son of legendary Mexican Champion Julio Cesar Chavez is not being reported. This is one of the reasons boxing has diminished over the years. On what planet is a fighter with a recorded of 4 wins 3 losses on the same level as his opponent, Omar Chavez, with the record of 15 wins 0 losses and 11 by way of knockout. The WBC, IBF, WBA, and all the other alphabet soups that sanctions boxing matches should really be strongly condemning these type of mismatches and doing more to ensure that they are not occurring. It’s a black eye for boxing when promoters, managers, and trainers are only looking for a payday and are willing to sacrifice the lives of young men and women for mere entertainment purposes or greed. Is one person’s life really mean that little that it has become more important to fill seats then save a life? It’s really a shame that everyone involved was not looking out for this young man. I am sure Chavez senior would never put his son in with Cotto because at this stage in his career Omar Chavez would be annihilated by Cotto and could be seriously be hurt. Perhaps if someone were looking out for the best interest of Marco Antonio Nazareth rather than trying to build Omar’s record with mismatches or sell seats this would have never occurred. As a boxing fan I am always disgusted when things like this occur because it could have been prevented. I don’t blame Omar Chavez or the Chavez family because a fighters job is to fight but there needs to be some regulatory body that actually regulates fights and is not run by greed because managers, promoters, and trainers are obviously not able to regulate themselves.

Feel free to post this on your website I am curious as to how other boxing fans feel or think about this.

Ronnie

Dear Ronnie,

You ask, Does one person’s life really mean that little?

The answer is easily NO!

Everyone in boxing has a heavy heart whenever a fighter dies in the ring, please don’t ever think otherwise. I know the death of this young man didn’t get a lot of publicity, it’s a difficult subject to deal with and of course our thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved.

I can feel you are troubled by this and I understand. But really, a fighter with 15 pro fights going up against a fighter with 7 pro fights is pretty much an everyday occurrence, and truthfully, it’s really not that big of a difference. Oh sure, promoters are obviously trying to pad one fighters record and the other fighter is there for a payday, but this was not a case of feeding a pigeon to a wolf. In fact they had fought before and it was a pretty close fight. Although I did not see the fight reports are Nazereth was on his feet when the bout was halted, it wasn’t a brutal beat down and the ref jumped in to save any further damage, albeit too late. Nazereth collapsed soon thereafter and succumbed to the fatal head injury days later.

Boxing is a very tough sport and one blow to the head is all it takes. And although I won’t go as far as to say there are never horrendous mismatches taking place I will say that for the most part, Sanctioning bodies and commissions do as good as they can to police the matches, but it’s not fail safe and last weekend proved it.

Fighters and fighters sons know the score long before they lace up their gloves, it’s the life they chose and they know the consequences and are willing to accept that risk.

As fans we have to learn to accept it as well….or move on.

Haye Back Pedals Away From 2 Brothers And Four Championship Belts

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

David Haye can try to sugar coat this November 7th WBA Championship shot at Nicolai Valuev any way he wants. The simple fact is he back pedaled his way out of sure beat downs from either Klitschko and now he will try to defeat the slower and not as technically gifted Giant.

Just a quick check around the World Wide Web horn and it’s pretty clear to me that Haye and his mouth have done irreversible damage to his mediocre career.

David was quoted today saying, ” … I could never put my name to the fight contract the Klitschkos offered. The level of disrespect they have shown me throughout has left me feeling insulted.”

Disrespect? Insulted?

This is coming from a dude who has pranced around with cartoon pictures of himself holding the heads of both decapitated and fallen Klitschko brothers. In my opinion, given the times we live in, I found that show alone to be one of the most tasteless and vile acts I have ever seen in boxing.

Disrespect? Insulted?

How about what you had to say about Valuev today David? “Valuev’s known as ‘The Beast From The East’ and there’s a reason he’s got that nickname – he’s a big, ugly, sweaty and hairy man from the Eastern Bloc,” said a release on Haye’s website. Haye went on to say, “David only needed a slingshot and a stone to flatten Goliath and I’m convinced my right hand generates more power than a stone.”

Really? I’m convinced that you David are not the great heavyweight you think you are. In your only fight at heavyweight, Monte Barret exposed some sloppy & poor defensive skills and everyone knows your chin is questionable at best.

I could go on about what Klitschko management thought and believed about the contract almost being done and I could point back to reports from both camps talking about the positive progress in the Klitschko negotiations, but why should I?

All everyone is going to remember here is that Haye went on a verbal tirade and called the Klitschko brothers every name in the book, said he was going to destroy them both and followed that up by crying hurt against Wladimir and then sneaking out the back door when he had to fight his big brother Vitali.

It doesn’t matter to the fans what the contracts said or didn’t say David.

What matters to them is what you said and how when push came to shove you ran for cover and then blamed everyone else for your yellow streak.

Their not buying it Mr. Hayemaker!

Neither am I.

Howard Grant: No Amount Of Preparation Can Help Bute

Monday, July 20th, 2009

With the Lucian Bute vs. Librado Andrade IBF Super Middleweight Title rematch locked and loaded, Andrade’s trainer Howard Grant is already brimming with confidence and is chomping at the bit to get his warrior back in the ring against the undefeated Bute.

“My guy knocked this Bute out in the first fight and they didn’t give him the win,” said an animated Grant, “this time we know what we are going to have to do. I’m telling you, if Bute thought he went to Hell and back in the last fight he is going to be shocked when he finds out what’s in store for him this time!”

It’s hard to blame Grant for feeling the way he does. Anyone who saw the fight knows it came to a hotly disputed ending and there are still many questions that remain to be answered.

One new question that needs to be answered is where in Canada will the November 28th HBO televised fight take place?  The first fight took place in Montreal’s Bell Centre but with the Montreal Canadiens hockey team scheduled to take the ice there that night there is a chance that the fight could end up in Quebec City.

Speaking on that matter Grant stated, “I really think it would be a huge disservice to the Montreal boxing fans if this fight doesn’t take place back at The Bell Centre. The fans in Montreal have supported both these fighters in their last few fights and they have been a big part of what makes these fights so great. To take this fight away from them and put it some two and a half hours away would be a real shame. I hope that the owners and the promoters can work out a deal to keep this fight in Montreal where it belongs!”

“Of course Montreal is a big Bute town, and rightly so,” said Grant,”He is an undefeated Champion and the city has embraced him.  But the city has also come to love Librado and why not? He is a really special fighter. I mean look, after the first fight when Bute was announced the winner Librado walked across the ring and hugged Lucian. Anyone who was in the arena that night and saw that knows just how special Librado is. I am not so sure the same would have happened if the shoe was on the other foot,” Grant paused and then laughed saying, “and this is coming from a guy who went and shoved the referee as soon as the fight was over.”

And even though Grant made his feelings known about putting the fight in Montreal he also wanted to make something else perfectly clear, “Honestly Bill, it really doesn’t matter where this fight ends up. It can be in Montreal, Quebec City, Alaska or Iceland. Wherever it is, Bute is going to have to get into that ring and to quote Joe Louis, ‘You can run but you can’t hide’, sooner or later Librado is going to catch this guy and then we will have him right were we want him.”

To earn the rematch Andrade had to face Vitali Tsypko in a mandatory title eliminator and was successful. It’s something Grant wants everyone to know and understand. “ I don’t want to hear anyone saying the only reason my guy got this fight was because of the way things happened in the last fight. Librado went back out there and beat a very tough Tsypko to get back in the number one position, this Bute rematch was just not handed to him.”

Grant went on to say, “I also don’t wan’t to hear about how much better Bute looked in his last fight and how he knocked this guy out so quickly while it took Librado 12 rounds to get his win.  Zuniga was nothing more than a blown up light middleweight and that’s it! I have a guy in my stable right now who would beat Zuniga. That wasn’t such a tough fight for Bute, not at all!”

In closing Grant said, “I am so glad this fight is official now. November 28th  is the date and that gives us plenty of time to get in shape and get a game plan to win this title.  Bute can prepare all he wants, there is no way for him to get ready for what’s going to happen to him that night. No way!”

Roy Jones Off His Rocker; It’s Time For Davy Jones Locker

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Davy Jones’s Locker is another way of saying the bottom of the sea: the resting place of drowned sailors. Roy Jones Jr.’s career may not be completely over but after seeing him in his Captain Hook get up at the the Lacy vs. Jones press conference this week it’s safe to assume he is on the gangplank and is a step or two away of joining his namesake at the bottom of the sea.

Earlier this week Jones said, “I enjoy the business of entertaining, I’m in this business because it’s what God blessed me to do. I love doing this.”

Roy, God blessed you to be the greatest Pound4Pound fighter of your generation, but your time has come and gone and a new generation of fighters have taken over. And you may love it Roy, but God did not bless you as an entertainer…get over it. The Pirate routine looks like the last act of a very desperate man. I’m surprised you didn’t dress up one of your fightin’ birds as a parrot and nail him to your shoulder.

Can someone PLEEEEZ answer me this simple question?

Why does it seem that a good number of Champion fighters can not go out of the game with an ounce of grace and/or dignity?

Why is it that more guys can’t go the path of a Marvin Hagler or Lennox Lewis and just know when enough is enough and call it a career?

Pssssst! You are embarrassing yourself Roy. More importantly, you are embarrassing the game of boxing.

You were a great champ and in your heyday and I loved to watch you perform, but I can’t watch this Roy…and I won’t.

I’m pretty sure there are many true boxing fans who won’t be tuning in either.

Just Thinking Out Loud

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Photo: Tom Casino – SHOWTIME

Has anyone ever seen Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell in the same place at the same time? I have joked that I think they are the same guy but at the Showtime Press conference on Monday only one Andre was present, it was Dirrell, or wait a minute it, was it Ward? Somehow I think we have been duped…literally. I am not sure that it really matters though because I doubt the name Andre will be around in the final act of this Super Middle tourney.

If Jermain Taylor, who has lost 3 of his last 4 fights should happen to get destroyed by Arthur Abraham and decides to retire what will happen to this Round Robin seeding?

For that matter, why is a guy who lost 3 of his last 4 fights in a tournament that is supposed to prove who is the best of the best at 168?

Is it just a coincidence that America’s top promoters, Top Rank and Golden Boy, are not involved in this tournament?

Speaking of not being involved, how is it that IBF Champ Lucien Bute and Librado Andrade are not a part of this tournament? Doesn’t their already set battle, which may end up on HBO, seem like a logical choice to be in the fray considering it was Showtime who broadcast their first controversial battle?

On another subject, although it isnt official yet it looks like Vital Klitschko will take on David Haye in his next WBC Heavyweight title defense. This leaves Chris Arreola looking to fight Oleg Maskaev in his next big test.

How does a split broadcast of those Heavyweight fights being aired by HBO on the same night sound? Don’t be surprised if that happens.

Arturo Gatti Tragedy Has A Thunderous Timeline

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

Photo: Bret “The Threat” Newton

BREAKING NEWS
Police Detain Gatti’s Wife as Suspect
The wife of former boxing champion Arturo Gatti was detained as a suspect by Brazilian authorities Sunday following his death. Police said 23-year-old Amanda Rodrigues was taken into custody after contradictions in her interrogation. The investigation was not complete, but authorities are preparing to present a formal accusation against Rodrigues, who denied being involved in her husband’s death.

Rodrigues was detained hours after the following article was posted.

In the wake of the horrible news about Former Champion Arturo Gatti there have been some very disturbing revelations about the last months of the warriors life that may or may not point to his tragic and untimely murder.
While researching this story Pound4Pound was informed of these events:
In March Gatti was arrested for an assault on his “girlfriend”.The following month of April saw Gatti or his attorney fail to show up for his April 7 court date to the charge.Days later while celebrating his birthday at a Montreal strip club Gatti was arrested for failure to appear.Gatti was released on $2,000 bail and a promise not to consume drugs or alcohol and to stay away from his former girlfriend and her son.

As we know reports started surfacing Saturday telling the grim story, Gatti, 37, was reportedly found dead inside a beach side flat he was renting at the Hotel Dorisol of Porto de Galinhas, Pernambuco, Brazil. Apparently he was found by his wife with a head injury. Gatti had arrived with his wife and baby on Friday on their second honeymoon. Local police consider his death suspicious.

Acting quickly the police have targeted Gatti’s wife Amanda Rodrigues as a prime suspect and reports of a night of partying in a Brazilian bar saw the couple get into a heated argument before leaving. According to his wife Gatti was drunk when they got to their room.

Inconsistencies in the Rodrigues story have led officials to name her as a suspect but at the present time she is considered innocent.

As the story goes, the wife and son found Gatti dead early in the morning.

Gatti was found with marks on his neck and some damage to the back of his head, the result of a hit from an unknown object they believe. Police found a blood stained purse strap that one detective believes may have been used to strangle the fighter.

Police are still investigating.

Between the months of March through July Gatti had his fare share of incidents all culminating in his apparent murder.

Are the events related or merely coincidence?

It’s anyone’s guess at this point but the fact remains that with the death of Alexsis Arguello and now Gatti, boxing has lost 2 of it’s brightest stars and in both cases the way they died will leave many wondering how and why did this happen?

Move Over Dr. Atkins, “Fast” Eddie Reveals The Chambers Diet

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

In a highly unprecedented move, # 1 ranked Heavyweight Eddie Chambers revealed how he got down to 208 pounds before his stunning defeat of the seemingly larger than life Alexander Dimetrenko this past weekend in Germany.

Oh sure, fad diets come and go, Atkins and Scarsdale are but a few, but when a diet plan proves itself on the big stage it can easily become all the rage amongst fans and competition alike. That is why it seemed so risky for Eddie to reveal his plan as other heavies, some uncomfortably close to him, are sure to gobble up (no pun intended) the latest weight loss craze.

With his trainer Rob Murray, Sr. and his promoter Dan Goossen by his side Chambers did not flinch when Pound4Pound asked how he got into the best shape of his life.

“EAT LESS & MOVE MORE” is a quick paraphrase of the Chambers diet plan.

Now sit back and take a deep breath all you couch potatoes or should I say couch Burritos. I know it’s a pretty difficult idea to grasp, but really…it works.

Oooo…..There is one little hitch to the plan that may cause many to balk at this revolutionary “new” idea.

It’s COMMITTMENT.

Both Chambers and his Trainer Murray agreed on the media conference call that until Eddie woke up in the middle of the night and came and told his coach he was prepared to sacrifice everything and commit himself fully to his work, there was going to be no way for him to become a Champion.

As we know Chambers lost the weight (some 15 pounds) and was impressive in his last performance. As long as he keeps up the new game plan and diet Chambers is sure to make some noise in the Heavy Weight division.

As to the other heavies who are now privy to the unheard of diet plan it’s up to them whether or not that want to employ this grueling routine.

Eat Less? Move more? Commitment?

I am hard pressed to believe any of them will be able to stick to the diet.

Chambers Made

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

No doubt in my mind that Heavyweight Title Contender “Fast” Eddie Chambers has went from also ran to a legitimate threat after his dominant performance over Alexander Dimentrenko this weekend. Pound4Pound readers may or may not be as taken by the once rotund Chambers as I am.

Said reader Frank Boff, “…Chambers is no great American Hope. He’s a good fighter, but not the complete package. He has flaws. Both Wlad and Vitali would beat him.”

Sure Eddie has flaws, but by staying away from In-n-Out Burger helped him avoid his biggest flaw as lack of stamina no longer plagues him. That 1-2-3 combo that put Dimentrenko on the seat of his pants was pretty nice. No way Chambers pulls that off some 24 pounds ago. He certainly showed he has the cajones to sit in the pocket with 6 foot 7 inch monsters.

My pal D. Miller says, “Okay, maybe Eddie isn’t great as Billy claimed but he is Americas top dog in regard to getting a shot at either Klitschko, not Aerreola.”

Did I say Eddie was great? Well if I did that was a stretch, but I did not stutter when I said Chambers is more worthy than Chris Aerrola. Although it appears both Goossen fighters are Klitschko bound.

That’s right boxing fans, Goossen’s boys vs. the Klitschko brothers is coming to an arena near you…and soon.

Chambers will hold a teleconference today to discuss launching himself into the # 1 WBO slot and has a mandatory awaiting him with Wladimir Klitschko.

Meanwhile sources close to Vitali have said the September 12th date penciled in for Dr. Ironfist most likely features none other than Aereola The Nightmare himself.

A word of warning to Dan Goossen, keep this fight stateside at all costs because if you drag Chris to Germany during the pre-Oktoberfest celebration you may find yourself living your own Nightmare. I hear the steins of Beer and plates of Wienerwurst start flowing very early over there.

But back to Chambers…

My other readers insinuated Chambers sits atop a pile of rubbish and others insist Kingpin deserves to be mentioned in the fray. I will plead the fifth in both cases for now.

You know what I would like to see?

How about a throwback fight with 2 Heavyweight Title fights on the same card?

K2 vs. Goossen Tutor in a winner take all the belts home match.

Better yet how about a loser leave town match?

No No No, I got it. The losing promoter has to have his head shaved.

I can see it now!

Goossen Holds The True Great USA Heavyweight Hope, His Name Is “Fast” Eddie Chambers, Just The Facts, Dan

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

At a Goossen Tutor press luncheon last week promoter extraodanaire Dan Goossen was quoted as saying, “This is about proving who the best heavyweight in the world is….This isn’t about complaining or calling people out, this is just about telling the facts.”

The fact is that if Goossen is grooming a heavyweight to become the next American to hold a heavyweight title, that fighter would be Eddie Chambers, not the one he was holding the press luncheon for, Chris Arreola.

Goossen went on to say, “We’ve made a commitment with Arreola to take risky fights at the different levels of his career where his abilities and KO power alone have made us look like geniuses.”The fact is while Chris has been somewhat impressive by knocking out almost every opponent put in front of him, let’s be honest, it’s a pretty long list of has beens, never beens and wanna be’s. The term Top Ranked won’t be used for any of his fallen foes.

Meanwhile Goossen has been shipping Eddie Chambers to hostile territory in Europe to take on the finely honed machines that are being bred like race horses in Germany. And here’s another fact, even though Eddie is 1-1 overseas he wasn’t humiliated in his loss to Top Ranked Povetkin and when Chambers dismantled the Top Ranked Dimentrenko Saturday I think a good number of Heavyweights were taking copious notes. Throw in a trip to the Cayman Islands and a hometown Main Event against former Champ Sam Peter and you can say that Chambers is doing what it takes to become a legitimate contender, and Goossen should be very proud of those accomplishments.

But on a week that Chambers was facing his biggest test Dan was more concerned about making sure we knew about another one of his heavies track record and what they have done for him throughout his carreer.

What it looks like to me is Goossen has done a good job of keeping this fighter on US soil and has never put him in with the likes of a Povetkin, Dimentrenko or even a Peter. Some would refer to that type of promoting as protecting your fighter. I will let you be the judge of that.

Now Dan is telling us his heavyweight is ready for Klitschko…either one of ‘em. And to be honest, he does have a heavyweight ready for Dr. Steel Hammer and his brother.

He has a heavyweight who has been groomed by fighting the top ranked fighters in his division.

He has a heavyweight who has been to Germany (twice) so he is ready to handle the boisterous German fans, and oh by the way… he has fared very well.

He also has a heavyweight who heard the flack about his poor conditioning and instead of talking about it he kept his mouth shut and showed up in the best shape of his life and beat the Ivan Dragoesque Ukrainian undefeated giant.

That heavyweight is Eddie Chambers.

Like Dan said, “This is about proving who the best heavyweight in the world is.”

He may not have proved he is the best heavyweight in the World on Saturday, but with his victory Eddie Chambers proved he is the most deserving American heavyweight to take on the Klitschko Championship machine next.

Just the facts.
